Although the weather is cold and miserable, there are still some tasks that can be conducted during July. This is the time to start the vegetables we intend to grow and harvest during spring and summer.

It is best to start your seeds in a hothouse or undercover to protect them from the frosts, or seedlings can be planted directly into the garden.

These vegetable seeds can be started in trays, ready for mid-August planting:

  • Beetroot

  • Leeks

  • Silverbeet

  • Spring Onions

  • Squash

  • Strawberries

Seeds, seedlings, tubers, or runners of the following can be planted directly into the garden now.

  • Lettuce

  • Onion

  • Parsley

  • Peas

  • Potato

  • Radish

  • Snow Peas

  • Strawberry plants

Start planning your vegetable garden now in preparation for spring growth. Remove weeds or smother out so they compost down, add compost to feed the micro-organisms and worms, and work out your planting plan to ensure rotations of vegetable groups to minimise any soil-borne diseases.

Keep warm and happy gardening.
