A Cluster of self sown leeks

Spring appears to have sprung with my plum trees and wattles busting into flower. Although we are still experiencing some cold days and cool mornings you can feel the warmth in the sun. The seeds I planted in my hothouse have germinated and lots of volunteer seeds have appeared randomly in my vegetable gardens. These include spring onions, leeks and lettuce.

As per usual the weeds have also commenced growing with at a faster rate than my plants. I have given myself a challenge to remove one wheelbarrow of weeds per day, and my chickens are gratefully enjoying these and slowly turning them into compost that will be utilised later in the year. I have one vegetable bed to go then I need to start on my flower beds.

Time to plant the following:

In seed trays for planting out in 4-6 weeks or post frost risk
  • Basil

  • Beans - climbing or dwarf

  • Beetroot

  • Cabbage - my summer favourite is Savoy

  • Capsicum

  • Chilli's

  • Cucumber

  • Eggplant

  • Pumpkins

  • Rockmelon/Canteloupe

  • Squash

  • Tomato

  • Watermelon

  • Zucchini

Directly into the garden as seeds or seedlings:
  • Asparagus crowns

  • Berries

    • Blueberries

    • Logan berries

    • Raspberries

  • Carrots

  • Cabbage

  • Celery seedlings

  • Ginger

  • Herbs

    • Mint

    • Oregano

    • Parsley

    • Thyme

  • Leeks

  • Lettuce

  • Onion

  • Peas

  • Potato

  • Radish

  • Silverbeet

  • Snow peas

  • Spinach

  • Spring onions

As you can see, there are busy times ahead but with the fresh mornings and slightly warmer days, it's a great time to get some soil under your nails and enjoy growing some food for yourself, your family and friends.
